Torrents of Destruction

Getting our heads around the carnage and suffering of the Indian Ocean periphery is quite simply impossible for us. It is nothing short of stomach churning to watch the horrific footage of bloated human remains decomposing in the humid heat, wailing widows scrapping in the wreckage of their homes and traumatised children lying motionless on their hospital beds. Every form of the media is awash with facts and figures of death and details of escalating worldwide humanitarian relief. But amidst all of this frenetic activity and information overload there is a distinct shortage of real answers.

Thankfully God is not numbed into silence the way we are. God’s Word tells us that tsunamis and every other major upheaval in nature have their roots in the historic fact of Adam and Eve telling God to butt out of their lives (Genesis 3). This devastating tsunami is part and parcel of the sad and terrible results of the Fall. (Romans 8:20)

Psalm 89:8&9 shows that God was not sleeping at 59 minutes past midnight (GMT) on 26 th December, but was in complete control working our His sovereign plans and purposes. ( O Lord God Almighty, who is like You?….You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up You still them .)

While it is true that no human being can say without doubt that they know all of the reasons behind God’s sovereign ways, the Bible does say that the catastrophic events that come to pass have often a mixture of judgement and mercy. The mercy in this situation is that the rest of the 6 billion or so human beings of the earth, who have also rebelled against God, are still alive. Perhaps some of those who have escaped have wondered why they have survived. Again the Bible has the answer – He is patient with you not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance . (II Peter 2:9)

No doubt many are wondering, “Why didn’t God do something to stop this?” The answer is that He has done something that will stop all tsunamis one day forever and ever. Jesus Christ has been to this sin cursed earth and died on a cross so that sinners can be reconciled to God. On the day when Jesus Christ returns to this earth He will usher in a renewed earth where those who have trusted in Christ will be with Him forever and ever in a never changing Paradise . Revelation 21:3&4

These tragic events are a time for us to be prising open our wallets and giving generously and also a time for taking a good long look into our own hearts. This tragedy like every other cataclysmic event is God’s megaphone, beckoning in love to a rebellious world, As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! (Ezekiel 33:11)
